Life's a beach

Not much to report - finished up in Bangkok for the time being and jumped a bus to the Beach Resort at Jomtien. Finding the bus station was the easy bit, deciphering how and where to buy a ticket and then find the appropriate bus was an adventure in itself, it isn't quite as organised as the wonderful mass transit system.

About 2 hrs on a decent air-conditioned bus and We arrive at Pattaya ... the place for hedonistic tourists ... more on that another time.

The way to get around here is by Baht bus - blue toyota utes decked out with a pair of bench seats in the back and a roof - basically there are hundreds of them that drive in circular routes around the main tourist areas, just hail one down and jump on, then get off wherever you want for 10 Baht. The fist one I jumped on at the bus station was empty but quickly piled up ... then emptied again when I pointed out that the number stenciled on the side was 666 .... a load of loud yanks thought that was bad news ... the driver gave me a rather evil look after that :P

As it was, it was probably the least-eventful ride of my trip so far, from the Malaysian GP driver in KL to the Bangkok moto ride and even the taxi to the bus station in torrential rain, half of it into oncoming traffic and th other half aquaplaning on streets turned to rivers by torrential rain. If thats the level of driving at normal times, then I am defiantly limiting myself to trains during Songkran, when probably half of the driving public are also drunk!

Haven't taken any pics for a few days, it gets a bit old-hat carrying around a camera and whipping it out all the time... I try to get around with nothing more than my wallet and phone (had to get a new one after the sticky-fingered Phnom Phen baggage handlers)... although after an altercation with the tourist police yesterday I realise I am supposed to carry a photo ID with me at all times (a couple of hundred Baht sorted that out).

My SCUBA plans have been slightly curtailed by an ear infection which means no diving so I am taking it al lot slower than I had expected. Rained a beauty today, just made it back to my hotel as the heavens opened .... although my hotel room isn't quite impervious - the rain began coming in around the window so I rang the lobby and they sent up their repair man with a big tube of silicone.

I know a guy who manages a bar in Pattaya and they have the weekly bar crawl on tomorrow night which I have been roped into (didn't take a lot of convincing) so I will be able to report about the hedonistic lifestyle of Pattayan tourists next time I log on (I'll probably have to clean it up though to get through Mr. Conroy's great internet filter lol).

Thats all for now
